JFJ Calls for Investigation of Lewin’s Statements

Friday, 09 July 2010, Kingston, Jamaica – In the interests of the credibility of our governance processes and Jamaica’s international standing the recent pronouncements of former Commissioner of Police and former Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force Hardley Lewin cannot be allowed to remain uninvestigated and untested. Mr. Lewin has alleged that Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, got word that a request for his extradition was in train within 15 minutes of his (Lewin’s) advising National Security Minister Nelson that this request was pending. At the time the only person formally told of this request by Mr. Lewin was the Minister who is said to have immediately called the Prime Minister.

If Mr. Lewin is unable to substantiate his allegations he will have been guilty of, at a minimum, creating public mischief. It is not enough for him to utter the words and then say "I am not into the issue of storytelling” and refuse to provide further information to substantiate his claims. He has a responsibility to the public to provide the proof in order to justify the damage done by his allegations.

Those against whom allegations have been made including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Security must also step up to the plate, refrain from ad hominem attacks and insist that a transparent investigation of the claims be made and reported on publicly by those with the responsibility for investigating claims of such a grave nature.

Jamaica MUST have the full truth of these damaging allegations. Jamaicans For Justice calls on the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Owen Ellington, to immediately order an investigation into all the circumstances surrounding these allegations. The findings of the investigation must be made public in order to restore trust and confidence in our public officials and as necessary, charges must be laid.

The damage done by Mr. Lewin’s remarks can only be remedied by the swift, impartial and transparent application of the law once the truth has been unearthed and revealed.
